Poppy tea has an incredibly long tradition and has been used for hundreds, even thousands, of years and even now is still quite popular as a home remedy throughout the world. From time to time poppy seed tea is still used as an initial procedure for helping to slow withdrawal effects from other opiate or heroin addictions. Poppy seeds tea can also be utilized as a sleep aid, pain reliever, intoxicant, cough suppressant, and even as a mild relaxant. Raw poppy seed tea is quite bitter and strong in taste and many people may even find it to be horrible tasting. Poppy tea can have effects ranging from a very light relaxing feeling and drowsiness to overpowering sedation where even nausea is sometimes common.
Before going into how to make poppy tea let's delve into a little bit of the history of the poppy flower so that we can learn to appreciate the significance of this fascinating plant. Dried poppy pods are easily sold in many countries throughout the world despite numerous drug laws. In North America alone, particularly USA and Canada, dried poppy pods are sold to be used as flower arrangement decoration and even in craft hobbyist retail stores. Poppy pods are also commonly grown around USA as ornamental decoration but in recent times authorities have begun to impose increasing pressure on poppy growers and suppliers. During the latter part of the 19th century, stores in large cities in the USA would frequently sell approximately twenty dried poppy pods for about $20 dollars.
Poppy pod heads can vary in size and they range from a small marble size to a larger golf ball size. In other words, they range from approximately two centimeters to ten centimeters in diameter. The average size of a poppy pod is about the size of a walnut which is approximately four centimeters in diameter. The official botanical names are often confusing and may include Papaver Paeoniflorum, Papaver Somniferum, Papaver Giganthemum, and Papaver Setigerum. These names include sub-species or different varieties of poppy plants as well.
The potency or strength of poppy pod seeds varies greatly from one particular species to another and even from one crop to the next. Poppy tea drinkers, even experienced ones, who learn to break up their dose into tinier portions as they drink the poppy seed tea, also know that it takes time to truly get used to the poppy seeds tea that you are working with and you need to start with lower dosages and then work your way up.
Attempting to choose the proper initial dose for your poppy tea is not that easy the first time out. In the beginning when working with a new batch of poppy seeds tea, you need to begin with about two to three medium sized poppy pods per person. Consistent poppy tea drinkers, and even high tolerance poppy seed tea drinkers, oftentimes use over ten to fifteen poppy pods at one sitting. Be aware that when using high dosages, for inexperienced poppy tea drinkers, you may encounter significant, uncomfortable nausea and you could also potentially overdose yourself. It can actually be very easy to overdose on poppy seeds tea on and it is certainly possible to die if too much is taken.
Making poppy tea is not that difficult and the first thing you need to do is to remove the poppy pod heads from the stems and place them aside for later. Dried poppy pods usually have a hole drilled through the top of their heads already which was intended to remove the poppy seeds. If the dried poppy pods still contain seeds, crack them open and pour the seeds out into a container. Dried poppy pods, that have been used for ornamental purposes, can sometimes be shellacked or coated and treated pods should definitely be avoided.
Secondly, you will need to crush the poppy pod heads thoroughly. You can do this with a regular hammer, coffee bean grinder or a large knife. Most poppy tea users prefer to grind the dried poppy heads and seeds into a fine powder but this is not really necessary.
Thirdly, you need to boil the poppy mash momentarily in a regular cup of water for every four to five poppy pods that are being used. The poppy seed tea should not be left to boil as it may result in more sludge and could reduce the potency and strength of the poppy tea. After that, let it stand until it is cool enough to be drinkable.
Finally, the last step is to pour the poppy tea through a wire mesh strainer or similar type of filter. Make sure you press and stir the mash to make sure you get most of the liquid out. Smaller particles may pass through the filter and you may see some loose matter and small gobs in the bottom of the container. Another more effective method of straining is to use a french press, which is actually designed for coffee making, but can also be used for any poppy seed tea preparation.
The flavor of poppy seeds tea may be quite bitter and may even be considered pungent. Most poppy tea drinkers will mix other sweeter flavored teas into their poppy tea to overcome this. You can also create a second steeping of the same batch of poppy mash but the second extraction will definitely be weaker, but at least it will still have some effect. Using less water for the second poppy tea steep works much better.
Most poppy tea drinkers don't know that the stems of the poppy pods can also be used in this process, but they are less potent than the poppy heads. You do not need to separate the poppy heads and can just use the whole stem and head together for poppy tea making. Even the leaves of the poppy plant can be used but they are not as well liked as the poppy heads.
As a warning, even though the aftereffects of poppy tea are not as addictive as snorted, injected, or smoked opiates, it's quite possible to become physically addicted to poppy tea. If you continuously ingest opiates, your body may get use to it and when you stop taking them, your body will need time to adjust. Unfortunately during this adjustment time it can be very unpleasant and quite often leads people to take more of the opiates to avoid these readjustments. There are plenty of real case reports of poppy tea users who found themselves with extreme opiate addictions after drinking only poppy tea. Even worse, and we're not just talking about the physical addiction, but the emotional and intellectual fixations that can form around drinking poppy tea so please proceed with caution.
Quick Poppy Tea Outline:
Step 1: Decide on the number of poppy pods per person. Usually one to three for beginner poppy tea drinkers, two to five for experienced poppy seed tea drinkers, and five or more for really serious poppy seeds tea drinkers. Remember, too much of a good thing can make you sick and definitely does not increase the enjoyment of drinking poppy tea.
Step 2: Chop up the poppy pods and pour out the poppy seeds into a container. Crush the poppy pods and grind them into smaller pieces.
Step 3: Use one cup of water for every three to five poppy pods used and boil the poppy seed pods temporarily or pour boiling water over the poppy mash. Then let it sit and allow it to cool for about five to ten minutes until the poppy tea is drinkable.
Step 4: Filter the poppy seed tea through a wire mesh strainer. Squash the pulp to cast out as much water as possible. You can save the pulp for a second extraction of poppy tea.
Step 5: This last step is optional, but you can add other tea flavors according to your own taste. Drink and enjoy your poppy seeds tea slowly. When you attempt a second extraction make sure to use two thirds as much water as before for your poppy tea.
