Preparing Poppy Seed Tea

Poppy tea can be prepared from either the dried poppy pods or with the seeds themselves. Dried poppy seeds are first crushed for easier extraction. When reduced to smaller pieces they form a poppy straw, which is usually steeped in boiling water. After steeping the poppy tea for a few minutes, the mixture then needs to be strained and the remaining brownish liquid can be used for drinking.

When one drinks the poppy seed tea, the effects can soon be felt after approximately half an hour and lasting up to about 8 hours. The poppy seed tea is very bitter and some drinkers will add their favourite flavorings to the poppy tea to cover the taste. Grapefruit extracted juice may also slow down liver enzyme activation, therefore increasing the potency and duration of the opiate effects.

The poppy pod tea can also be evaporated over a very low heat to produce a thicker more concentrated liquid or a dry powder. Some drinkers will insert this liquid or powder into gel capsules to allow for a much more accurate dosage.

Although oral consumption is the most common method, poppy pod tea can also be inhaled through the nose or rolled and smoked. However, many users may not be used to it and feel unpleasant side effects from these types of methods because of the irritating substances which are present. Poppy seed tea is not the same as opium, since it is made from the whole plant as opposed to opium which is made from exuded latex only. Some drinkers will bypass the poppy tea recipe stage and simply add poppy straw to their favourite food such as yogurt. This method may partially conceal the bitter taste but it may also lead to more gastric discomfort than consuming regular poppy tea or dried tea.

The dried poppy pods may also be used in an undried green poppy pod state to make poppy tea. Even though there is a popular belief that poppy tea can only be produced from dried poppy pods, this is not an accurate statement. The green poppy pods are as viable for the production of high quality poppy tea as much as the regular dried poppy pods. The advantage of dried poppy pods is more important in the production of large quantities of pure opium tea as opposed to whole poppy pods. This is because it is much simpler to grind the dried poppy pods into a smaller mass that is easier to work with in a large scale production. In contrast, the green poppy pods tend to get very thick and sticky and it becomes very difficult to reduce it into the much smaller particles achieved by grinding dried poppy pods into a powder.

To make a poppy tea from the green poppy pods, all you need is a high powered blender, boiling water, a stove and a sauce pan. It is necessary to blend the green poppy pods into a fine mash in the blender so that the maximum amount of alkaloids can be extracted. Then the blended poppy mash needs to be heated over a medium heat with 3 poppy pods for every eight ounces of water. This proportion may differ in relation to the strength of the dried poppy pods or ones own tolerance to the opium tea. Make sure you prevent the opium tea mash from boiling, as this may destroy the alkaloids necessary to make a strong and potent poppy tea. Finally, mix the heated opium tea mash with some lemon juice and honey and steep for about fifteen minutes. The resulting concoction will creat intense pleasure and is great for pain relief.

Varying Effects of Poppy Seed Tea

The effects of poppy seed tea actually varies quite widely depending on the dosage, a person's sensitivity to the opium tea and on any opiate tolerance which has been previously built up. The poppy tea's contents is the foundation from which all opiates, whether natural or synthetic, are derived. The drinker can also expect a warming sensation of the body when drinking the opium tea. A heightened mood change may follow, along with a state of intense euphoria. Pupils may start to constrict, and the face and neck may start to flush. Other effects from drinking poppy seed tea may also include euphoric feelings, relaxed happiness, drowsiness, and loss of focus of concentration.

Side Effects and Tolerance of Poppy Tea

Side effects increase especially when the dosage is high and the user is already experiencing things such as sleepiness, stomachache, lethargy, itching, slowed breathing and nausea. Nausea is more common for first-time or inexperienced users. At very high doses, the side effects of drinking poppy tea can be dangerous and may even cause death due to the interruption of breathing or choking on one's own vomit. Also, drinking high concentrations of opium tea will often result in constipation especially if there are patterns of prolonged usage.

The frequent consumption of poppy seed tea results in tolerance and dependence. Chemical dependency typically builds up after a few weeks of consistent daily usage but can vary with each individual. Frequent use of poppy tea followed by a sudden termination will result in heavy withdrawal symptoms including leg and abdominal cramps, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, insomnia, cravings and also anxiety. Physical symptoms of withdrawal usually fade after approximately 4-10 days but cravings and psychological dependence may continue for much longer.

Overdose from Drinking Opium Tea

It can be fairly easy to overdose with poppy tea as your basic recreational dose is not too far off from a more concentrated dose at which side effects may become unpleasant or dangerous. Experienced drinkers will start off with a modest initial dose and then follow it up by ingesting smaller amounts of poppy tea over an extended period of time in order to slowly build up to the desired level.

Poppy Pod Tea Alternatives

There are many other safer species of plants which can be used to product a sedative type of effect for poppy pod tea drinkers. These include such examples as kava kava and Eschscholzia californica also known as the California Poppy, is becoming increasingly more popular.
