The Oriental poppy variety highly sought after due to their beauty and easy care. They can grow to a very tall height of 3-4 feet and reach up to 6 inches in diameter, not to mention the sheer variety of colors they are available in from red to white. Climates ranging from -25 to +25 degrees Fahrenheit are the most ideal growing situations and the best seasons to plant them in is early autumn, their dormant period, as they start blooming usually around early summer.

Growing Oriental Poppies

You can either buy seeds or you can find these plants for sale in local nurseries or even online from private growers during the summer season. Make sure to purchase ones that are in 5 inch to 1 gallon pots and pick the healthiest looking ones that contain signs of new growth in buds and leaves.

To grow from seeds start off by loosen the soil to a depth of about 15 inches using a garden fork or tiller. Add approximately 3 inches of compost fertilizer and mix thoroughly. Water only when needed as too much will cause the plant to die. Add a thin layer of compost during spring and a layer of mulch during winter months if you keep them outside. Remove the mulch layer as the weather gets much warmer especially during summer months.

If you bought Oriental poppies that already in the growing phase then you can proceed directly to the transplanting step.

You can begin that by finding an area that has adequate drainage and plenty of sunlight. They best time to perform transplanting is when they are dormant during the month of August. They do not favour being moved so find permanent location where you don`t have to move them again and again. You will find that it is much more effective when planting from root stems as opposed to transplanting the entire plant. If you choose to proceed with this method try doing it in early spring or autumn.

Transplanting Oriental Poppies

Once a location is found prepare the soil by loosening it with a gardening fork to a depth of about 15 inches and mix in about a half inch layer of compost fertilizer.

When transplanting from a pot you can gauge the size of the hole that you need to dig by making it twice the size of the container itself. After doing so carefully remove the root ball from it and if you are using your own root cuttings make sure to utilize pieces that are three inches in length and covered in a good one inch of soil. Oriental poppies should be planted about 15 inches apart from each other. An important thing to know is that planting the flower in shallow in soil will cause them to hold on to too much water near the roots and will cause rot.

Next, fill in the soil around the root with care and light pat it down with a garden spade to make sure it is packed firmly. Water it until the soil is nice and moist and make sure that it never goes dry.

Taking care of the plant afterwards is much simpler as all you need to do is add a light sprinkle of compost during spring with a layer of fresh mulch on top to aid in the control of weeds growing and hold in moisture. During the summer, when it is dormant, you do not need to water it too much. They will start growing in fall again until the first signs of frost appear. In these climates you will need to add about 7 inches of mulch after the initial freeze to prevent heaving and remove it when spring arrives.

As you can see, growing Oriental poppies can be done at various stages. For the avid gardener who likes the sense of accomplishment of growing from scratch, they can purchase seeds, but for those who want to get a head start you can buy Oriental poppies for sale from growers directly. In either case, the procedure of transplanting Oriental poppies into your larger garden follows the same steps.
