Growing them is one thing but to transplant poppies in an appropriate way will ensure their continued survival.

These techniques can be applied to all types of species including transplanting oriental poppies.

Transplanting Poppies

The poppy flower is for the most part generally known for its use in producing opium. However, there are various other species that make are good for enhancing and beautifying landscapes. This popular plant can be easily recognized by its bright red, orange or yellow flowers that have a black spot right in the center. They blossom in the spring and summer seasons and will usually expire in very cold weather. In warmer climates, the poppy will cease flowering around August to September and but will begin again around the following spring season.

Transplant Poppies

To undergo this process of transplanting poppies properly you need to take heed to the following:

1) Wait until the early days of autumn when the weather begins to cool down and they stop flowering. In particular, if you are transplanting oriental poppies, you can wait until the middle of or end of the summer months when their blooms start wilting.

2) Put in a spade into the soil roughly one foot away from the base of the plant. Retract the spade slowly to loosen the soil around the poppy.

3) Take away the spade and rest it next to the original location. Then put it into the ground again and loosen the soil there as well. Carry on loosening the soil in a circular pattern making sure that you go around the entire circumference of the plant.

4) Place your hand into the soil and raise it to lift the poppy plant up from the ground. Clutch the opposite side of the roots with your other hand and pick up the entire plant. Poppies have very long roots so you might need to continue loosening the remaining soil around the roots by means of your hands before it will completely become free.

5) After that you will need to dig a hole in an area that has access to plenty of sunlight and has fertilized soil to transplant the poppy plant. The hole that you dig should be about a foot in diameter and deep enough to have room for the long roots on the bottom of the plant. The poppy should rest at about the same level as it previously did in its prior location.

6) Then carefully put the plant into the recently dug hole and gently pack in the hole with soil.

Transplanting Oriental Poppies

As a final note, you will need to space each one about 10-15 inches away from each other if you are thinking of transplanting poppies in groups. This will make certain that the process you are going through to transplant poppies will be a successful one. Again, these steps can also be applied to more specific species especially when it comes to transplanting oriental poppies.
